Iraq

Like many people I am disappointed that the government has not committed itself to an inquiry on the Iraq situation.I do not personally share the view that an inquiry would undermine our troops’ morale. There was an inquiry into the situation in the Dardanelles during the First World War after all. There is a precedent therefore.

One response to “Iraq”

  1. Bearing in mind that the Head of the Army, General Dannatt has not resigned and would appear to have the full support of his men, I think you are quite right to take the view that the Army would not object to an enquiry at all. Our soldiers will remain professional to the core. They probably take General Dannatt’s comments slightly more seriously than any subsequent view from Margaret Beckett. They know the writing is on the wall but they will still do their job - their courage has never been in question. What they do need is for the political establishment to do their job and provide them with a considered exit strategy. I believe this enquiry would have been a step in the right direction.
