Nick Bourne AM

Leader of the Conservatives in the Welsh Assembly

DC Hits Town

DC is in town today. When I arrive at the railway station I bump into Mari James, a friend since the days of the National Assembly Advisory group.'’So you’re here to meet David Cameron'’ she says. How is  it that Mari James always knows what is about to happen!. I ask her for her lottery predictions.!

The first engagement of the day is in Llanrumney to visit a Youth Inclusion Project and to meet with young people involved. In a Healthy Living project which provides kids with advice on cooking nutritious food.. This is followed by a demonstration by some members of the Fire Brigade on firework safety.

Dave then gives interviews to the media (lots of them) on issues as diverse
as ASBOs (”sometimes they do work”),

Iraq (”an inquiry is needed at some stage”),

the absence of Elfyn Llwyd from the vote on Plaid Cymru’s motion
calling Labour to account on Iraq ( laughingly……” I don’t wish to
comment on that”),

the future of the National Assembly under the Conservatives (”we want to make it work”),

doing things differently in Wales e..g. top up tuition fees (” what devolution is all about”),

and the possibility of an alliance in the National Assembly ( ” a matter for the Welsh  Conservatives , who are fighting for as many Welsh votes and seats as
possible.
After lunch and  the opportunity to discuss various issues the leader is speaking to the. Youth Justice Convention at the Cardiff International Arena. The speech goes well and then after the speech there are some probing questions from an audience of the convention members made up of magistrates, youth offending teams and others.
The day has been a very clear exposition to me of the theme of Civic Responsibility and the role of society in helping to deal with community problems This will  be the approach of a Cameron government involving voluntary organisations in delivering public services–not simply leaving it
to the state.
It is also very clear to me that here is a leader who is intent on recapturing the centre ground. Great– at last!
