Wayne David
In an uncharacteristic lapse of fairness and judgement, Wayne David has written to the Western Mail and his letter is published today on the St Athan decision.
As Rhodri Morgan rightly said repeatedly in his statement to the Assembly after the excellent news that the Defence Training Academy was to come to St Athan, the characteristic of the Welsh bid was that it was an all-Party bid attracting the support of all of the parties in Wales, both at Westminster level and at Assembly level.
Indeed, David Melding, , Conservative AM for South Wales Central and chairman of the Assembly’s military academy group, and Stephen Crabb, Conservative MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire and vice chairman of the Parliamentary steering group for the RAF St Athan bid, had both been part on the relevant committees that had been formed to support these bids.
All of Wales was delighted at this news, and certainly all Unionist parties have played their part in securing this bid. As I say, it is uncharacteristically churlish of Wayne David, who is generally fair, to try to derive narrow political advantage from this.

Ultimately, this was a LABOUR victory that did involve some minor tory input…Nothing more, nothing less. Labour MP’s and AM’s were fundamental in securing this for Wales, the same cannot be said for the conservatives.
